Welcome! I’m so happy that you have my Be Kind pattern. This pattern was specifically designed for people who want to start embroidery but have no experience. As you work through the hoop you will learn 7 stitches. You will also learn how to hoop your fabric correctly, split floss without tangles, and thread your needle the easy way. The Be Kind stitch tutorial is broken down into 10 videos. Each video covers a single stitch or process in embroidery. Let’s get stitching.

1 – Set Up

In this set up video we start with getting our fabric in the hoop. Then, we will trace our pattern onto the fabric. Next, I’ll show you how to avoid tangles in a full skein of floss and split strands of floss. Then, we will cover two ways to thread a needle. At the end of this video you will be ready to get stitching.

2 – How to make Backstitch

Part 2 of the Be Kind stitch tutorial covers Backstitch. We will walk through each step in real time. Then, I will share my tips and tricks for easy stitching. Learning backstitch first will give you a solid foundation for the stitches to come.

3 – How to make Whipped Backstitch

Whipped backstitch builds on the foundation of backstitch. It starts with a line of regular backstitch, then adds a whip stitch. This gives the lines of stitching a uniquely tall and rope like texture. It is a great way to practice backstitch and learn some new ways of working with the needle.

4 – How to make Stem Stitch

Now that we have a solid foundation in stitching backstitch and whipped backstitch, we will work on stem stitch. At this point in the Be Kind stitch tutorial we add in the next element of common stitches, holding thread with one hand with using the needle in the other. Many stitches require the coordination of both hands. Stem stitch is a great way to begin to practice this skill.

5 – How to make Chain Stitch

In this video we go over chain stitch. Chain stitch builds on some of the skills we learned with stem stitch. We will again be working with a loop on top of the fabric, but this time we will need to work through the loop rather than just holding it out of the way.

6 – How to make Satin Stitch

Satin stitch is a simply, yet tricky stitch. The basic mechanics of the stitch are very simple. You come up on one side of the shape and down on the other, repeat. However, getting those stitching to look even, and rotate the way we want can be a challenge. In this video I walk you through all my tips and tricks for making satin stitch look great.

7 – How to make French Knots

French knots can be an intimidating stitch to learn. I have spent a large amount of time figuring out the best way to make French knots and the easiest situations to make them in. In this video I share all my tips for making consistent knots. By the end of this video you’ll be making French knots like a pro.
